Florence: A City of Effortless Beauty
Oh, bella Florence, it's no wonder you are one of the most visited cities in the world! Being the capital of Tuscany, this Renaissance jewel blends history, art, and culture into a pure masterpiece. Florence is undeniably beautiful. It's almost like it has its own shade of light and color—we'll call it Florence amber glow. Italy offers something for every type of traveler. Whether it’s your first trip or your fifth, a little planning goes a long way. This guide provides essential tips for traveling to Florence, ensuring you make the most out of your visit.
Unmissable Attractions in Florence
One of the first places to visit is the iconic Duomo di Firenze, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Its magnificent dome, designed by Brunelleschi, is jaw-dropping, and climbing to the top offers the most stunning views of the city. Next, don’t miss the Uffizi Gallery, home to priceless artworks such as Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" and Leonardo da Vinci's masterpieces. The Ponte Vecchio, a historic bridge lined with shops, also deserves a visit. Pictured above from my trip in 2021, you can see why Florence is a photographer's dream! This bridge is where I was talked into buying a stunning (and expensive) cameo necklace!
For those interested in sculpture, the Galleria dell'Accademia houses Michelangelo’s renowned statue of David, an iconic symbol of Renaissance art, and a bare-naked bottom. If you don't make it to the Galleria, walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo. This square is perched above the city, so it has epic panoramic views, along with a replica of David—and it's free. Finally, a stroll through the gorgeous Boboli Gardens offers both relaxation and an enriching, fragrant experience.
If you're not one for standing in long lines, you can purchase tickets in advance for the main attractions that let you skip the line and include a short guided tour. It's a convenient way to see the sites.
Best Time to Visit Florence
The ideal time to visit Florence is during the spring (March to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller compared to the summer months. This not only makes it more enjoyable to explore the city, but it also allows you to appreciate the beautiful landscapes surrounding Florence without overheating or getting stuck in a mob of tourists. Flight and hotel prices drop slightly during the off-season.
Where to Stay
There are plenty of comfortable, clean hotels in Florence, with luxury and budget-friendly options scattered throughout the city. I am partial to Hotel Croce di Malta. I prefer this hotel for its proximity to the train station (Firenze Santa Maria Novella), a vibrant piazza, good eats, and famous attractions. I stayed in a balcony room overlooking the turquoise pool and the city. Not only was it very clean and comfy, but the staff were helpful, and the included buffet breakfast was delectable. The highlight of this hotel is the rooftop terrace and bar, which offers panoramic city views, drinks and snacks, and a mellow ambience with music.
Day Trips and Culinary Experiences
Florence serves as an excellent base for day trips to explore the notable regions of Tuscany. Popular excursions include the charming town of San Gimignano, famous for its medieval towers, and Siena, known for its impressive Piazza del Campo. Visiting Pisa to see the Leaning Tower is another memorable trip. If you're uncomfortable renting a car and navigating the Italian roadways, I recommend booking a tour. Choose which towns to visit, how long you'll go for, and the activities you'll do. My favorite tour was the day-trip to Pisa, San Gimignano & Siena, stopping at a winery for lunch and wine tasting! It was undoubtedly the highlight of my trip. For a reasonable price on Viator, you can spend the entire day discovering three Tuscan gems without worrying about transportation.
Another memorable day trip destination from Florence is visiting the Cinque Terre—five famous and idyllic coastal towns, each with its own charm: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. You can arrive by train, a rental car (I do NOT recommend this. Google "roads between the Cinque Terre" and you'll understand why), hire a private driver, or take a day tour from Florence. The Cinque Terre Express is a little train that connects the towns for easier access. If you enjoy walking, you can opt to take the hiking trail with a pathway between the towns.
While in Florence, indulge in pizza or pasta-making classes that offer hands-on experience in creating traditional Italian dishes. It’s not just a culinary class; it’s a cultural immersion. Moreover, the city boasts a range of excellent restaurants, including La Tenda Rossa and Osteria Vini e Vecchi Sapori, where you can enjoy authentic Tuscan cuisine. My favorite restaurant is just a few steps down from Hotel Croce di Malta—Osteria Patella. I savored the truffle tagliatelle in a grana padano cheese wheel with a glass of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. It's not just a meal but a spectacle as they prepare your pasta in the giant cheese wheel. I even took a video to reminisce about my unforgettable Tuscan dinner.
Museums and Artistic Heritage
Art lovers will appreciate the vast array of museums in Florence. Besides the Uffizi Gallery, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Bargello Museum provide insight into Renaissance art and Florentine history. You can also explore local galleries showcasing contemporary works as well. And don't forget about the churches! Some of the more well-known ones are the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Basilica of Santa Croce, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. But my favorite church that I just happened upon was the Basilica of Santa Trinita. It was free to enter, less crowded, and absolutely breathtaking inside!
Florence is a treasure trove of art, culture, history, dreamy architecture, and culinary delights. With the right planning, you can experience the profound beauty this captivating city has to offer. From breathtaking attractions and day trips to savory pasta classes and exquisite dining, Florence guarantees an unforgettable travel experience.

I stopped for a glass of wine at Ristorante Buca San Giovanni. Look at that view!

My hotel balcony. I would definitely stay at Hotel Croce di Malta again.
